i absolutely love the look of stained wood, skirtings, dado's, doors etc, so last year i painted and stained the wood in my hallway (this is a ronseal product for anyone who doesn't know, you paint on the base coat then varnish for the top coat and its supposed to look like stained wood). I did like the effect, it DOESN'T look as good as the real thing but its a good substitute. However, over the year, bits have chipped, as they do and it looks horrible. Sooo i decided to buy some paint stripper and go down to the original wood then varnish. THEN, i had the bright idea of buying a heat gun, for paint stripping, it would work out cheaper in the long run if i decided i liked the effect and went all through the house, plus no fumes etc. Soooooooo today i went and bought one. I've just half done my banister and it looks absolutely fantastic, and i am SOOOOOOOO happy!!! lol. so its a hit, i'm doinf all skirtings, dado's, door frames and doors. it may take me a while but just think of the time it'll save me in the long run, once varnished thats it isn't it??? _________________ Housework is a complete waste of time. My mum used the varnish stuff that looks like wood on her door frames, and yes it isn't a bad look. Not having kids run around in her house, its lasted too, shame yours has chipped
Heat guns are hard work like you said, but its the only way to do it, unless you re-wood everywhere. I remember trying it years back and scorched the wood black pmsl, but obviously, youve made a better job at it than me ! I love natural looking wood, this time round we waxed it, which is nice looking too, but not so easy to clean down as varnish :S...hard work Shell, but it'll look smashing when it's done! _________________

I used to enjoy doing it Shell, hope it doesn't take you too long |
