Bagpuss, the saggy old cloth cat regularly voted Britain's best-loved children's television character, is to make a comeback.
The show was created in 1974 and only 13 episodes were ever made.
Media company Coolabi has now bought the rights to Bagpuss, along with fellow Seventies classics The Clangers and Ivor the Engine, in a £400,000 deal and is planning to revive the character for a new generation of viewers. New projects are likely to include a revival of the television series and merchandising spin-offs.
Bagpuss was created in the 1970s by Smallfilms, a television company run by Peter Firmin and Oliver Postgate. Firmin's daughter played Emily, a young girl who collected abandoned items and took them to a shop where Bagpuss fixed them with the help of Gabriel the Toad, Madeleine the rag doll, a carved wooden book-end called Professor Yaffle and a group of organ-playing mice.
According to Postgate, the BBC broadcast the episodes only 27 times in total "until in 1987 their experts decided they were too old-fashioned for what they called 'today's children'." He added: "That piece of nonsense came to an abrupt end in 1998, when Bagpuss was voted the best children's film ever in a BBC nationwide poll, and since then I can say without undue modesty that we have enjoyed a popularity that is no more than our due."
**** I can't belive they only made 13 episodes, I thought there were loads! lol I always used to watch this and loved Bagpuss to bits. I even for the last 5 years have had a little Bagpuss beanie sitting in the corner of my dashboard in my car, that I got as a free McD's gift lmao! _________________ If you see someone without a smile.....give them yours |
