155 Whales Dead On Aussie Beach
More than 150 whales have died after beaching themselves off southern Australia. Rescuers tried in vain to save stranded pilot whales
The long-finned pilot whales were discovered trapped on a rocky beach on the remote west coast of Tasmania. Initial reports suggested that 72 were killed but a total of 155 are now confirmed dead.
Thirty-two of the giant mammals have been succesfully shepherded back to sea. Many of the whales had suffered deep cuts after thrashing onto rocks on Saturday, said Warwick Brennan, from the state's Department of Primary Industries and Water.
Mr Brennan said. We get a bit nervous when they come into shore. The beachings on Sandy Cape follow the deaths of another 50 pilot whales which became stranded nearby a week ago. Australia's southern island of Tasmania often experienced whale beachings, a phenomenon so far unexplained by science.
Since 1900, there have been 75 whale strandings recorded in Tasmania, with several involving more than 200 animals, Mr Brennan said.
Pilot whales reach seven metres (20ft) in length and weigh up to three tons.
How sad and odd that it happens in the same area over and over _________________ If you see someone without a smile.....give them yours |

Yeah thats sad too red but at least they only go when their time is up, not when it isn't. I love elephants, they are so sensitive. I've watched programmes where one elephant had died and another one stood over the dead elephant for hours or days (can't remember) it was so sad to see it they have real feelings of grief and family, they truly are marvellous creatures..........I wish scientists would find out why the whales go and beach themselves, maybe is a lunar pull, or perhaps just clever shoals of fish luring them to their death, it's sad whichever way, I love whales too ! _________________ If you see someone without a smile.....give them yours |
